Technically, bass range encompasses the frequencies between 32 and 512Hz. When your engineer friends say that you need some width in the bass range, they are referring to the upper half of that spectrum. Sub bass is commonly defined as 90hz and below. Kicks will stray above that, but often include sub frequencies.
